Seats

The Mazda MX-5 benefits from seats that are lighter and thinner than those in the outgoing car, yet thanks to a new net structure they are more supportive and offer improved comfort. In addition they contribute to improved refinement by reducing the amount of vibration transmitted to the occupant by 35 per cent compared to the outgoing car. With a 20mm lower hip point and an extra 2 degrees of recline available, there’s a great range of seat adjustment. SE models feature premium black cloth trim, while Sport Nav models feature heated black leather seats and the option of £200 Sand Leather trim.

MZD-Connect

Mazda’s MZD-Connect in-car connectivity system is standard from SE-L Nav models onwards. Accessed via the 7-inch colour touch-screen display and Multimedia Commander, it works with compatible internet-enabled iPhone and Android smartphones to access a variety of free mobile content via Aha™ or Stitcher™ applications. These cloud based platforms feature thousands of stations, personalised location-based services and both Twitter and Facebook feeds. MZD-Connect also supports iPod®, MP3 and CD playback, plus SMS and email readout functions.

Premium Bose® Sound System

Mazda and Bose®have teamed up to develop a premium sound system tailored to the MX-5 for an outstanding listening experience even with the roof down. Standard on Sport models the system includes nine high-performance speakers including UltraNearfieldTM speakers in each headrest, plus a 13-cm woofer in a bass enclosure in the footwell and a digital amplifier below the soft-top storage. The UltraNearfieldTM speakers create a sound that’s perceived much wider than the actual distance between speakers so that music seems to extend beyond the confines of the cabin, roof up or down.

Storage

To realise a lightweight, compact and driver-focused cabin, storage areas were cleverly designed to deliver the necessary day-to-day practicality without compromising the sporty ergonomics and style of the cabin. The front console box at the base of the central stack is designed to accommodate mobile phones and iPods and a hub integrated into the box includes USB and SD card slots for digital device connection. Positioned between the seats is a lockable centre box that offers secure storage if the car is left unattended roof down. The outgoing MX-5 featured a manual fuel flap release lever in the rear console, now the flap unlocks automatically with doors. When diving with the roof up the space where the top would be stored can be used as an extra luggage area. The Mazda MX-5 features a pair of removable cup holders (one on SE models), either of which can attach to the front of the console by the passengers leg or one of the two positions between the seats.

Refinement

At the same time as ensuring the Mazda MX-5 delivers unadulterated driving pleasure, Mazda’s engineers have worked hard to make sure this fun factor doesn’t come at the expense of comfort. With a 30 per cent reduction in low-frequency road noise entering the cabin compared to the outgoing car and extensive efforts to reduce wind noise the latest MX-5 is the most refined yet. An example of this focus is the addition of a ‘partial open-close system’ that automatically raises and lowers the side windows by 6mm when the doors are opened or closed thereby allowing for a tighter seal to the roof when driving. The roof itself benefits from extra sound insulation and delivers a noise reduction of approximately 40 per cent over the outgoing model.
